Building Capacity

Aparajita’s ideology inherent in all its programs was one of capacity building and empowerment. Whether it be the Bharat programs or the self-help group formation, the empowerment of women was the propelling fuel behind both. Similarly livelihood supports to the vulnerable sought to ensure their self-reliance in the future and hence supported those ventures which the community and the individual supported was in a capacity to handle. Trainings and technical support were to be a hallmark of all the initiatives.

The key challenge in disaster rehabilitation is how to empower the vulnerable, shift relief and rehabilitation to a development mode and involve the affected communities as stakeholders. Preparedness is most effective when built into the process of local level development, planning and implementation, hence, the panchayat (local self government) members, community leaders and others were oriented especially in relation with disaster preparedness and so as to be able to develop a village based mechanism for dealing with similar situation in the future.
